Company description:: MEDFORD – He’s only 58, but "Retirement Tim" Johnson decided to make a career out of providing a straightforward, easy-to-understand user’s guide to retirement. Tim’s mission is to make retirement fun by removing all the doubts, issues and questions that people don’t want to talk about, such as long-term care insurance (do you really need it?), monthly fees at senior communities, the rights of nursing home patients, choices your adult children may have to make for you, how to (wisely) leave money to a church and how to get ready for emergencies, like falls.
Johnson gives talks, writes columns and runs a website – www.retirementtim.com -- that explores all these questions in simple, to-the-point language and, he said, is about the only place you can find these things out without someone trying to sell you something. With a background in marketing, insurance and real estate, Johnson realized last July he had an abundance of
experience in nursing homes, senior care facilities and – after burying a wife, mother, father and brother, knew the ins and outs of that least pleasant reality of aging.
"I’ve picked up a real practical knowledge of the nuts and bolts of retirement, aging and death – things few people really want to talk about, unless they’re trying to sell you something," said Johnson. "It’s a sea of information out there and I try to refine it down and present it objectively, all it all in one place." For example, one of the most useful pieces of information he gives out is that you can download an Advance Directive from partnershipforcaring.com, fill it out before witnesses and, he said, you’ve handled one huge, scary – but simple – bogeyman of aging.
Johnson recently spoke at a Rotary Conference and speaks widely – with next engagements in Georgia and Chicago. Along the way, he promotes his forthcoming book, "Answers" A User’s Guide to Retirement," to be handled by Barnes & Noble.
"When thinking about retirement," Tim says, "remember that financial security is 40 percent of life and personal, emotional and spiritual security is 60 percent." A volunteer firefighter and farmer, Tim holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees and has pursued post graduate work in managed health care and senior housing.
